As shown in the bar chart below, topology control is proven to be very effective in reducing the impacts of congestion under all conditions evaluated, including average conditions, extreme peak conditions with facility overloads, and high renewables penetration conditions.
TCA technology has been simulated in operational PJM models for representative weeks of 2010 and 2013 conditions. Extrapolating results, these simulations show that the technology can save over $100 million in annual costs. This represents more than 50% of the total cost of real-time transmission congestion. Additionally, reduced congestion will decrease average power prices in constrained areas of the grid. These benefits increase as higher levels of variable sources of power, such as wind and solar, are added to the grid.
